I’ve been using my iPhone 3G S for a little bit more than 2 weeks by now and thought that I should write down my experience so far. This is probably the best phone that I have used so far. Before switching from my Samsung SGH-i200 (which I was very happy with), I was concerned about moving to touch screen, since I’ve often use the possibility to make calls without looking at the phone. I’ve had one phone before with touch screen and I was never satisfied with that one, but after this two weeks I’m not worried anymore since the voice command functionality of iPhone works very well. Another concern before I bought was battery life time (for example Scott blogged about it as “laughable”), but I’m happy with it so far and it has so far always lasted the complete day and sometimes even two days.
I could go on and write about all the good stuff, but many others do too. I haven’t seen so many criticize iPhone (except for missing MMS in previous version), but after these two weeks I have found room for improvements. Some of them could very well be on my list because of me not knowing how to do it (remember I’ve had the phone for two weeks), but some things are just not good.
- The installation asks for my credit card (and early too). I don’t believe that any other company in the world would get away with it. Just imagine what would have happened if Microsoft asked for your credit card, when starting up your brand new XBOX. I understand that it is to make the rest easy, but they could have done it when I make my first buy instead.
- When calling I need to choose between looking up a contact or dialing a number. In Windows mobile you just hit the numbers and it constantly matches the corresponding letters against the contacts. This is compensated by the voice commanding though.
- The number matching on the incoming calls are terrible. Our switch board adds two zero’s before the number and that is enough for iPhone to fail matching the number against my contacts, meaning that I almost always does not see who is calling. This was no problem on the Windows mobile phones and I don’t know about Symbian, but I haven’t heard any colleagues complain about it.
- It is only possible to clear all or nothing in call history.
- I miss a possibility to silence the phone so that it does not vibrate or rings.
- When writing it takes way too many letters writing to get word suggestions. On T9 the suggestion comes up also for short words (2-3 letters) and that saves a lot of typing.
- It is ridiculous hard to move the cursor in the text, for example to correct a word that is spelled wrong. Copy and Cut also feels like an afterthought.
- The month view of the calendar is terrible. All you see is that each and every day has something (marked with a dot), and to be able to see if there are any openings for a day it needs to be selected and then scrolling through that days appointments.
- Week view in the calendar?
- I would have liked the possibility to see my upcoming appointments without entering the calendar, for example immediately when turning on the phone (number of unread emails would also have been good to have).
- It is not possible to move or delete mails when being offline for Exchange accounts! So when working through the emails on the airplane it is not possible to delete them!
- When traveling and not allowing roaming, it is cumbersome to actively sync your mails because you need to switch roaming on (three levels, “clicks” down) and then off again. With Windows mobile this is very easy, because default it does not sync when roaming, but I could just manually do it without changing any settings.
- The Hotmail integration is at best limited. It is not possible to see any folders, there is no sync of deleted emails and so on.
- iTunes!
This is my list of the not so good things, but please teach me if I’m wrong or leave comment on the things you like/dislike with your iPhone.
